What a bridal makeup trial is, and why it is required

A makeup trial is the session where your look is decided, weeks before the wedding. It is tested, adjusted and photographed, so that nothing is left to decide on the day itself. In this house’s bridal collections it is not optional: it is included, and it happens.

It sounds like a formality. It is not. It is the only moment in the whole process where you can change your mind and nothing happens.

What is actually being tested

Not the makeup. How your skin — yours, not a similar one — reacts to products that will sit on it for fourteen hours. How much it shines at three in the afternoon. Whether the concealer settles into a dry patch. Whether the lipstick you love survives the first kiss or holds until the toast.

And one more thing, the one that surprises people most: how you see yourself. Some brides arrive asking for a strong eye and, seeing themselves, realise they wanted something else entirely. That takes conversation, and on the wedding morning there is no time for it.

How it goes

It takes about two hours, at the atelier, with the artist who will be with you on the day — you never meet your artist for the first time on the wedding morning.

1. We talk about the dress, the venue and the hour. A five o’clock garden wedding and a nine o’clock wedding in a dim ballroom do not take the same makeup, even for the same bride.
2. The skin is prepared. This is half the work and the part nobody photographs.
3. The full look is applied, exactly as on the day.
4. You look at it calmly — in window light, in artificial light, and in photographs, where makeup behaves differently.
5. Whatever needs adjusting is adjusted, and the look is recorded step by step so it can be repeated exactly.

You leave the trial knowing how you are going to look. That is the whole promise, and it is bigger than it sounds.

What to bring

• Photos of the dress and the accessories, especially if there is beading or colour.
• A clear idea of the light and the time of day at the venue.
• Light-coloured clothing. A black shirt changes how your skin tone reads.
• The products you use daily, or at least their names. Skin used to an acid reacts differently.

Why it cannot be skipped

Because on the wedding day there is no going back. If the shade is not what you expected, if your skin reacts, if the hairstyle cannot hold the weight of the veil — all of that has a solution at a trial and none at seven in the morning with the photographer waiting.

Arriving without a trial is the only way to guarantee surprises on your wedding day. And that is exactly the day you do not want them.
